Evaluation of Cardiac Findings by Echocardiography in Infants Born to Mothers With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

• Objective: To evaluate cardiac findings by echocardiography in infants born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
• Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 70 infants of GDM mothers and 70 control infants, all within their first 24 hours of life, who underwent echocardiographic evaluation.
• Results: In infants of diabetic mothers and control infants, respectively, the interventricular septum (IVS) diastolic thickness was 6.1 ± 1.0 mm vs. 4.6 ± 0.6 mm (P < 0.001); systolic thickness 7.4 ± 1.7 mm vs. 6.7 ± 1.1 mm (P = 0.006); right ventricular isovolumetric contraction time (IVCT) 28.6 ± 4.8 ms vs. 27.1 ± 4.4 ms (P = 0.048); ejection time (ET) 211.8 ± 21.1 ms vs. 219.4 ± 17.1 ms (P = 0.021); myocardial performance index (MPI) 0.37 ± 0.08 vs. 0.31 ± 0.05 (P < 0.001); tissue Doppler imaging early-to-late diastolic flow velocity ratio (TDI E/A) 0.77 ± 0.13 vs. 0.81 ± 0.11 (P = 0.032); left ventricular isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT) 41.9 ± 4.6 ms vs. 39.5 ± 5.6 ms (P = 0.007); and MPI 0.45 ± 0.09 vs. 0.39 ± 0.06 (P < 0.001).
• Conclusion: In infants of mothers with GDM within the first 24 hours of life, IVS thickness was higher, right ventricular TDI E/A ratio was lower, ET was shorter, right ventricular IVCT and left ventricular IVRT were longer, and MPI values were higher in both ventricles compared with controls.
